Going Green

We’ve been using environmentally friendly cleaning products in our homes for years. Now, big businesses and companies are seeing why it’s beneficial to go green.

Everyone knows that you should use green products for cleaning in your home whenever possible. More and more larger companies, businesses, and even government entities are now turning to environmentally friendly products. There have never been more green products approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Disinfecting products is use in many different applications in our homes. Imagine how many applications they have in larger institutions.

While people aren’t beholden to government regulations for food safety in their homes, it is a good idea to take note of these standards. Most food poisoning incidents don’t occur at a restaurant, they occur from food prepared in at home. Keeping a clean kitchen with environmentally friendly products has never been easier, thanks largely to the innovations made in the commercial and industrial sectors.

At the beginning of the Covid pandemic, everyone had to become acquainted with disinfectants of all kinds. They went from an item people had in their closets that they maybe use a few times a week, to an indispensable tool that was being used constantly. This relationship with disinfectants and cleaners became closer to that of people who work in food service or the medical field. Thankfully, there are more non-toxic and environmentally friendly products available for cleaning at home or on the job.

Anyone who has worked near food in the last twenty years or so knows that the standards of food safety have only gone up. This has much to do with the PR/HAACP report that was publish in 1996. Commonly known as an HAACP plan, every entity, whether a slaughterhouse, a supermarket, or a restaurant must have one. HAACP plans have made American food safer than it has ever been. A huge component of these plans are the chemicals that have been approve by the EPA. Food safe disinfectant has been around for a long time now, but it has never been more “green.”

Here are the main reasons why greener cleaning products are just plain better, no matter the application:

  • Better for the environment. This is the most obvious reason for switching to environmentally friendly cleaning products. Whether it’s in your home or it’s a large company, green products place less strain on the planet. Not only are these solutions, powders, and cleansers generally certified as non-toxic by the EPA, disinfecting products and cleansers that are “green” are made from ingredients that are more environmentally conscious. Add to that, when most companies manufacture these products, they are often in environmentally friendly packaging. This means that going green with your cleaning can be better for the environment from creation to disposal.
  • Fewer health risks. Many of the chemicals that is find in common products can be quite harmful to humans. They can cause chemical burns, headaches, or even death in certain situations. Products that are typically know as green shouldn’t contain these chemicals. People who choose to go green sometimes do it because they or a loved one has a health condition. Many products on the market might be dangerous for people with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions. Many companies are recognizing these kinds of risks aren’t good for business and are opting for green alternatives.
  • Safer for the food supply. The standard for any green product should be to have as little impact on the environment as possible. What if a cleaning product did that but also had minimal impact on food sources? If a cleaning solution could destroy all foodborne pathogens and keep more food in the food chain, that would be a huge innovation in food safety. Well, it has happened; there are products out there that eradicate 99.9 percent of foodborne pathogens that have also been certified non-toxic by the EPA. Food safe disinfectant has always been important in keeping Americans from getting sick from bacteria and parasites in their food. Now, those same kinds of solutions can be apply to help stretch the food supply further. The less food lost to spoilage and contamination, the more ends up on our tables. Food safety is directly link to food security. Food security is going to be one of the largest challenges facing the planet in the 21st century.

As you can see, it’s not only imperative for the environment that everyone explore eco-friendly cleaning and disinfecting products. Whether it is in your home or on a food processing plant floor, making the green choice also makes sense for the overall health of your family. Not to mention that non-toxic products can potentially help our food sources feed more people, with more efficiency.
